Politics and Mental Health -- The 45th, It's Been 12 Months!

I find this last year’s Los Angeles Times article Why Therapists are Having Such a Hard Time Talking About Trump still an interesting read.  Although I don't agree with the sharing of supporting (or not supporting) Trump in the clinical setting based on my analytical /psychodynamic training I think

this leads into the slippery slope of disclosure in the therapeutic setting (please see my previous blog on disclosure -- http://www.renaldostrayhorn.com/2017/12/and-then-zeus-died.html).  As a African American clinician I am in a particularly challenging position.  I should stop there:  However, there might be assumptions of my political belief (which might or might not be accurate).  I have had intelligent arguments with friends whom I admire about the discussion of politics in blogging and in public arenas.  The point of interest is that despite their insight and overall smarts it is really difficult to have a conversation about politics and mental health being combined and how that mesh does affect my work and beliefs.  The accountant can "shut it down" and focus on the bookkeeping agenda.  The therapist deals with philosophical and the emotional residue of feelings.  Clinical thinking is often social and relational thinking.  This complex also bleeds into "religion."  All to say: The country is in the divide and whether we discuss Kaepernick and the NFL or the current president or gun control; therapist should be in constant intra-inquiry and dialogue with other analytical and clinical colleagues to understand the cultural trends.

What becomes more complex is understanding the the cultural trends and guiding a country through cultural trends.  The hard question is can an analyst sway the awareness of the Psyche (a social therapist) or are we simply there to whimsically ride the aire of the Psyche (a analysand's analyst).  I think even the best of therapists are working through this very process.

For all concerned this is a constructive process, if at times disconcerting, and where the service is concerned it is yet another instance where the processes of the service user mirror their service, in the sense that as the service empowers and partners service users, its role will be questioned, challenged and transformed, too. http://www.mentalismminds.com/mentalism-books/
